Supporters of 'Sarah's Law' Demand Investigation
Into Improper Use of Public Funds
Contact: Katie Short (805)-640-1940
July 10, 2008
Today supporters of Proposition 4, Sarah's Law demanded that James Holst, General
Counsel for the University of California Regents, investigate improper use of public
funds and resources by The Bixby Center for Reproductive Health Research and Policy
at the University of California, San Francisco.
The request is based on a pamphlet originally published in 2005 and again in 2006,
with minor changes, encouraging opposition to parental
notification laws such as
Propositions 73 and 85 which appeared on the ballot in November 2005 and 2006 respectively.
The letter describes how the misleading and biased statements made in The Bixby
Center pamphlet violate California law by attempting to persuade voters that arguments
in favor of the initiatives had no merit. The contents of the pamphlet also clearly
violate the restrictions on the use of UC resources for electioneering.
The letter sent to Mr. Holst states, "The public funds entrusted to the University
of California belong equally to the proponents and opponents of any proposition."
