The Yes on 4 Campaign wants Californians to
know that when it comes to protecting young girls, California is in the minority.
Thirty-four states have parental involvement laws in effect.
This means that over 60% or three-fifths, of Americans live in a state with a parental
involvement law. California is among the minority of states
that do not provide protection for young girls who face the difficult choices that
come with teen pregnancy.
Parental involvement
is non-partisan. Both red states and blue states have had the common
sense to enact parental involvement laws, including heavily Democrat-majority states
like Minnesota, Delaware, Iowa, and Massachusetts.
Unlike twenty of these laws, Prop 4 requires only notification,
not consent from a parent before a minor makes the significant
decision to have an abortion. Also, Proposition 4 allows for notification
of a different adult family member in circumstances where a girl fears abuse from
a parent.
"The Yes on 4 campaign thinks it's about time
that California join the majority of states in enacting laws that involve a family
member in a minor's decision to have an abortion. As most
of the country has recognized, this is common sense," says spokeswoman
Katie Short.
The Yes on 4 Campaign
is a coalition of doctors, nurses, and educators working to pass
Proposition 4/Sarah's Law because they care about the physical and emotional health
of vulnerable young girls, who shouldn't have to make such an adult decision alone.
